A review of an individual’s social media profile and posts might uncover embarrassing material that could prove to be a liability in a business deal or partnership.
The level of due diligence you perform on a particular individual should align with the level of access they have to you, your assets, and your information.
Criminal background checks for personal support workers and nannies, reference checks for new employees, and civil litigation checks for tenants are inexpensive but important vetting that can provide peace of mind and find an issue before it becomes a severe problem.
While the threat of a cyber attack is high (and rising), there are several affordable and easy-to-use cyber security services and tools that can help keep you safe. Practicing good cyber security will go a long way to protecting yourself and limit the severity of an attack. If you need help, speak to an expert to find out what is right for you.
Do not enter any data into the site and consider any data entered into the site compromised. Disconnect from the internet and use antivirus software to conduct a full scan. Change all associated passwords. Monitor accounts for suspicious activity or signs of misuse.
You can visit the free site www.haveibeenpwned to check if one of your services has been the victim of a breach. If so, change all associated passwords. Consider a password manager that stores account information and actively monitors if accounts are compromised.
It is best to limit the amount of publicly identifiable information available online. See if you can remove any unnecessary data from the internet. Monitor all of your public accounts for signs of misuse. Ensure that easily available information is not used for any passwords or as answers to security questions for accounts.
